Your First Lesson – What to Know

KIDSCAN SWIM / FIRST LESSONS

A little preparation can make that first visit feel easier for everyone.

The first swim lesson is a big moment. Some children race to the pool; others want to hold your hand and take it all in. Both reactions are normal. The goal on day one isn’t to master a new stroke—it’s to begin building a positive relationship with the water and the instructor.

Before you leave home

Talk about swimming in simple, reassuring terms: “We’re going to meet your teacher and try some things in the pool.” You can look at photos of the facility or pretend to blow bubbles in the bathtub. Avoid promising that your child won’t get splashed; instead, let them know their Aquatic Educator will help them learn at their own pace.

What to pack for your first lesson

  • A comfortable swimsuit and a towel
  • A swim diaper and spare, if required for your child
  • Easy-to-change clothes for afterward
  • A bag for wet items and a water bottle
  • Goggles if suitable for your child’s level—no need to force them

Give yourself a few extra minutes

Arrive a little early to find the change room, use the bathroom, and let your child look around. A calm arrival gives everyone more room to settle in. During the lesson, look for small moments of progress: joining the group, listening to an instruction, or trying a new movement.

The best question to ask afterward

Instead of “Did you pass?”, try “What was your favourite part?” or “What did you try that was new?” It keeps the conversation focused on courage, enjoyment and effort.
